Reopening Pasadena’s Central Library

Preserving the Past, Protecting the Present, and Preparing for the Future

Pasadena's Central Library has been a cornerstone of our community for nearly a century. Designed by the renowned architects Myron Hunt and H.C. Chambers, this iconic building was completed in 1927 as the first project in Pasadena’s Civic Center Plan. It has since served as a vital resource for generations of residents, offering a place of learning, culture, and connection.

However, time and the ever-present risk of earthquakes in Southern California have taken their toll. In 2021, the Central Library was closed after it was determined that the building was vulnerable to significant damage—or even collapse—during a major earthquake. This closure marked a somber moment for Pasadena, as one of its most cherished landmarks was shuttered indefinitely.

Measure PL: A Community-Driven Solution

Measure PL is more than just a bond measure; it’s a movement to restore and protect our Central Library. Scheduled for a vote on November 5, 2024, Measure PL will provide the essential funding needed to retrofit, repair, and upgrade the library, allowing it to reopen and continue serving as the cultural heart of Pasadena.

The proposed measure will:

  • Enhance Safety: Retrofit the building to withstand earthquakes, ensuring the safety of visitors, staff, and the community at large.

  • Preserve Historical Integrity: Maintain the library’s distinctive architectural features while addressing critical structural issues.

  • Upgrade for the Future: Integrate 21st-century technology and modern facilities, making the library a forward-looking resource for future generations.

  • Reopen Central Library: Restore the library's role as a hub for education, culture, and community engagement.

Our Mission: Why We Advocate for Measure PL

At the core of Measure PL is the belief that Pasadena’s Central Library is more than a building—it’s a symbol of our city’s heritage, values, and commitment to learning. We advocate for Measure PL because we believe that the Central Library should continue to be a place where generations of Pasadena residents can gather, learn, and grow. This measure is an investment in our community’s future, ensuring that the library remains a safe, accessible, and vibrant space for all.
